Mary J. [Elvina] Andre
The death last week on Thursday, April 20th., of Mary J. [E.] Andre removed from the family circle of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hogle their oldest daughter. She was born June 14th., 1857, upon a farm near Davenport, Iowa. She was married Dec. 31st., 1873, at Big Rock, Iowa, to W.H. [William Harvey] Andre and was the mother of five children, one child dying in early youth.

Mrs. Andre came to Mt. Vernon about one and a half years ago, practically an invalid then. Her poor health dates some ten years back. A patient sufferer through long years of struggling with invidious and unrelenting consumption, she was ever the faithful and loving mother, daughter and sister. Called upon to bear more than the usual burden of trial, rest has come to quiet and sooth for all time the pains of earthly existence. Such comfort as her loving care wrought for those she loved during life must surely come now that her task is done, while the memory of it all lingers to encourage and bless those who mourn.

The four children who, living, mourn the great loss of mother are: Mrs. Olive McLeod of Manilla, Iowa, Wm. C. Andre of Gray, Iowa, Mrs. Jennie Aikman of Gray, Iowa and James Franklin Andre, an infant son [he was actually 6] will find a home with Mrs. McLeod.

Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church Friday afternoon, the sermon being preached by the pastor, Rev. Dr. H.C. Stuntz. Interment was in the Mt. Vernon cemetery. (Mount Vernon Hawkeye, Mount Vernon, IA, April 30, 1899)
