The Rev. Dr. Sperry was born in Meyersdale, Pa., and at the time of his passing was living in Hickory, N.C.

He was a graduate of Meyersdale High School and graduated from Catawba College with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He received his doctor of divinity from Catawba College and a master's of divinity degree from Lancaster (Pa.) Theological Seminary.

He was ordained in his home church in Meyersdale. He then served a two-year internship in Christ Reformed Church in Hagerstown, followed by his pastorate of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Allentown, Pa.

He then became pastor of Faith United Church of Christ in Milwaukee, Wis., then served at Corinth United Church of Christ in Hickory.

The Sperrys moved to Australia for three years, where he was a member of the staff of Wodonga Parish of the United Church. That was followed by two interim positions in Australia for six months.

Upon his return to the United States, he served as assistant pastor at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and then served a year as interim pastor of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ in Newton, N.C.

His hobbies included fishing, boating, camping, yard work, reading, and working in the community with Hickory Rotary Club, Hickory Soup Kitchen and other agencies dealing with the community's needy. He also served on the Hickory Human Relations Council.

His joy was in his wife, children, interacting with people, and championing the causes of the poor. His ministry was centered on the premise that whoever you are, God loves you.

He was the son of the late Benjamin F. and Elizabeth Saylor Sperry. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marion Pillman Sperry; and one sister, Alma Beal.

He is survived by two sons; one daughter; one sister; and three nephews.

Hickory, N.C. - The Rev. Dr. Gordon Holt Sperry passed away April 19, 2008, at Abernethy Laurels.

Born Oct. 6, 1921, in Meyersdale, Pa., he was the son of the late Benjamin F. and Elizabeth Saylor Sperry.

He married Marion Pillman Sperry in 1951.
Dr. Sperry was a graduate of Meyersdale High School and graduated from Catawba College with a bachelor of arts degree in history.

Sperry of Conover; one sister, Audrey Feld of Oakland, Md.; and three nephews, Frederic Feld of Colorado, Michael Feld of California and Thomas Beal of Meyersdale, Pa.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Alma Beal.

A celebration of the lives of the Rev. Dr. Gordon Holt Sperry and his wife, Marion Pillman Sperry, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Grace Reformed UCC in Newton, with the Rev. James Luck officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

A private committal service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery.

Clergy of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
