Marion Adele Pillman Sperry
Hickory, N.C. - Marion Adele Pillman Sperry, 88, of Hickory, passed away April 7, 2008, at Abernethy Laurels.
Born June 19, 1919, in Porter, Ind., to the late Arthur David and Anna Clara Anderson Pillman.
Mrs. Sperry was a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. After college she worked in the National Office of the Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minn. After her marriage to Gordon Sperry in 1951, the couple moved to Allentown, Pa. They then moved to Milwaukee, where Marion taught elementary education, and then to Hickory, where she tutored at Ridgeview Elementary School and was a substitute in the Hickory Public Schools until her retirement.
Marion Sperry's passion was for her family, her church and her music. She had a kind and gentle spirit and was adored by her husband and family.
Mrs. Sperry is survived by her husband of 56 years, Gordon Holt Sperry of the home; two sons, David G. Sperry of Lawndale and Douglas B. Sperry and wife, Laura, of Hickory; a daughter, Ann E. Sperry of Conover; and a cousin, Joan Wallin of Sioux City, Iowa.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Soup Kitchen, 131 Main Ave. NE, Hickory, N.C. 28601 or Cooperative Christian Ministry of Greater Hickory, 31 First Ave., SE, Hickory, N.C. 28602. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Marion Pillman Sperry.
