Diplomat, soldier and explorer. Travelled to Tibet and Bhutan.

Wrote the first account of the Himalayan kingdoms to be published in Europe-'An Account of an Embassy to the Court of the Teshoo Lama in Tibet, containing a Narrative of a Journey through Bootan and part of Tibet,' (London, 1800), A French translation appeared Paris in 1800, and a German translation in Berlin and Hamburg in 1801.

Later served at the siege of Seringapatam under Lord Cornwallis.

Mother was Anne Warren b.1717.

Cousin of Warren Hastings (13698489), Governor of Bengal.
