Merlin L. Whonsetler, 92, Avilla, died November 20, 2002 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Kendallville. He was born in Swan Twp on April 11, 1910 to Charles L. and Mary E. (Yarian) Whonsetler. He married Mary J. Simon on November 25, 1931 in Kendallville. She died September 20, 2002. Also preceding him in death were a son, Tommy, who died December 14, 1989; a brother, Kenneth; a sister, Ruth Ryan; and a great-great-grandchild. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Max and Mary Whonsetler, and a daughter-in-law, Carol Whonsetler, all of Avilla; 5 grandchildren, Stanley Whonsetler, Kathy Smith, Vicki Martin, Paula Zolman and Stephanie Wicker; 6 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He had been a farmer and a lifetime resident of the community. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Farm Bureau. Services in Avilla. Burial, Hooper-King Cemetery.
