John was the eldest of 12 children born to Frederick Dent Messenger and Jane Marie Johnson. His siblings: Clark (died young), Mary Adelia, David Grove, Dennis Burris, Samuel Johnson, Royal Hastings, Virgil, twins Orlin and Rolin, Hyram (died young), Martha (died young).

John grew up in Ohio and when his father moved the family to Iowa in the early 1850s, John went along.

On 25 Apr 1852 in Davis County, Iowa, John married Catherine Eliza Lord, daughter of Hosea Lord and Amelia Lockwood, who were also from Ohio.

In the 1860 census (the first to formally count residents of Washington Territory), John was farming and he and Catherine were living in Vancouver, Clark County, with three children: Inez Adelia, Albert Augustus and Clara Jane. They had moved to Oregon right after their marriage, which is where Inez was born (1854), but had moved north to Clark County by 1856.

In the 1871 territorial census, the family included one more child: Anna Eugenia. Two other children had been born and died since the previous census: Lillie Mae and Frederick Oscar.

John continued to farm successfully and the couple lived in Clark County until John's death, after which Catherine moved to live with a granddaughter until her death 20 years later.
