David Grove bears the names of his paternal great-grandfather and his grandfather. He was the 4th of 12 children born to Frederick Dent Messenger and Jane Marie Johnson. His siblings: John Ecard, Clark, Mary Adelia, Dennis Burris, Samuel Johnson, Royal Hastings, Virgil, twins Orlin and Rollin, Hyram and Martha Amelia.

David spent his early years in Chester township, Knox County, Ohio till his father moved the family to Wayne Co., Iowa in the early 1850s. They lived on a large farm near New York in Union township, Wayne County.

In Washington Co., Iowa, on 1 Aug 1861, David married Mary A. "Fay" Harvey, daughter of David Harvey and Katherine Fox. They had six children but only five have been identified in census records: Dennis J, John B, Catherine J, Estelle M and Charles Emanuel.

For a time after they married, the couple lived in Union township, Wayne Co., Iowa. In 1870 they are living on a farm between David's father and his brother, Royal. David's father died in 1871 and by 1880, David had moved his family to Brighton, Washington Co., Iowa where they lived most of the rest of their lives. They also lived in Jefferson and Henry counties for short periods. David was still doing farm work and odd jobs into his 70s. He died in 1917 at 79. His wife died three years later.

D. G. Messenger Passes Away.

David Grover Messenger, son of Frederick and Jane Messenger, was born in Knox county, Ohio, on Sept. 10, 1837, and passed away at the home of his son, D. J. Messenger, in Wayland, Ia., after an illness of several months, being 79 years, 6 months and 27 days of age at the time of his death. Death came as a result of a fall which he sustained in his old home in Brighton, December 9, 1916.

When but a boy he came with his parents to Wayne Co., Ia., in which place he grew to manhood.

On June 2, 1860 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Harvey, of Washington county. To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters. The three daughters Kate, Stella and Hattie proceeded their father in death.

He is survived by his aged wife, three sons, D. J. Messenger, of Wayland, John, of Washington, and Charles, of Brighton, besides eighteen grand children, ten great grand children and a wide circle of friends.

Early in life he accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Christian church at Shiloh, in Washington county, and remained a member of said church until 1910, which time he brought his letter to the M.E. church in Wayland.

Funeral services were held in the M. E. church on Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. W. Cochran. Interment was made in North Hill cemetery.

The following out-of-town relatives present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Messenger, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Powers, Mrs. Chas. Edwards John, Gertrude and Blanche Messenger, all of Washington; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Messenger and family, Mr. and Mrs. Newton Griffin and Mrs. Irvin Stortz, of Brighton, and Mr. and Mrs. Cloyce Messenger, of Winfield.
