Charles was the seventh of nine children born to Capt.William and Susannah Rogers Kerry. By 1850 he had immigrated to the United States where he married Eunice Nickerson in Wisconsin. The couple had six children but only three reached adulthood. In 1864, along with three others he joined an oxen-driven covered wagon train. They headed west on the Oregon Trail in search of gold. Upon reaching Boise, Charles abandoned the search and set up a blacksmith shop, only returning to his family in Oak Creek two years later.
