Funeral services were held today for George C. Whatley, 87, widely-known Birmingham real estate man. Mr. Whatley died Monday following a short illness. Engaged in the real estate and insurance business for more than 50 years, he played an important part in the development of Birmingham, having been active in such civic improvements as the paving of Highland Avenue and the erection of the viaducts in the downtown section. Mr. Whatley came to Birmingham 60 years ago with the Birmingham Railway Light and Power Company. Shortly thereafter he entered the real estate business. He was a native of Jackson, Ala., and a graduate of the University of Kentucky. He was a charter member of the Birmingham Country Club and a member of the vestry of St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands. Mr. Whatley married Miss Bessie Garrett {1892}. Funeral services were held at Ridouts, Dr. William H. Marmion officiating, assisted by the Rev. Archie C. Smith, of Vine Street Presbyterian Church. Interment: Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers: .....; Survivors: the widow, Mrs. Bessie Whatley; 1 daughter, Miss Eula Whatley; 2 sons, George C., Jr., and Bates Whatley; 1 grandson, George C. Whatley, III.
