MIDDLETON- Catherine Beahm Alvar, the beloved wife of Kenneth Alvar, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023.


Catherine was born in Independence, Kan., the daughter of Dr. Edgar and Dorothy (Stillions) Beahm. She graduated from Independence High School and attended Smith College in North Hampton, Mass., where she met her future husband, Ken.


Catherine returned to Kansas after one year at Smith College and enrolled in the University of Kansas. One year later she married Ken and they moved to Providence, R.I., where Ken was a Physics graduate student at Brown University. Catherine enrolled at and later graduated from the University of Rhode Island where she earned a B.S. in Chemistry. When Ken finished his Ph.D. they moved to New Jersey, Seattle and then back to Providence where Ken held post doctorate positions.


Later they moved to San Diego, Minneapolis, back to Providence and finally to Los Alamos, N.M., where Ken held positions in health physics, safeguards and became the safeguards group leader. Upon his retirement, he and Catherine made their home in Middleton, Wis.


Catherine is survived by her husband, Kenneth; and brothers, Frank Beahm, Ed Beahm and Tom Beahm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Edgar and Dorothy Beahm.
