Sophia Lambe was born to Alfred Lambe and Ann (nee Philpot) in New Bond Street, Westminster in 1820. Her father was a wine merchant and purveyor of Mineral Water to the King. In 1838 Sophia went out to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) to help keep house for her brother Frederick Lambe who was an Agent and also later a Coffee Planter. There she met Captain William Fisher, it was a love match. They were married on the 1st February 1840
William soon left the Army and became a Coffee Planter which turned out to be a difficult decision. He had three coffee estates but they never did very well. However the couple had 11 children, 7 of whom made it to adulthood. The children were educated in England. In 1865 finally got a more stable position working as Superintendent of Police. He fell off a horse and was kicked in the head and died instantly in 1866. Sophia had to ride out to retrieve his body.
Sophia stayed in Sri Lanka because 4 of her children were still there Alice, Lucy, Arthur and Francis Conrad. Alice left not long after. Her son Philip was lost at sea in 1880. Arthur died in Sri Lanka in 1883 and then Lucy also left. By this time her son Jack had become very successful in the Navy (ultimately to become first Sea lord). Sophia returned to England although sadly became somewhat estranged from Jack. Alice and Frederick were in the UK.
Sophia died in South Kensington on Cathcart Street in 1875. She is buried in Kensal Rise.
