Archibald Graham died at the Presbyterian Hospital yesterday morning at 10:40 o'clock, following confinement for about a month and declining health for the past 12 months. He was 83 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church. In the absence of Dr. Albert Sidney Johnson, pastor, Rev. C. C. Beam will officiate. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Dr. Henry L. Sloan, H. P. Harding, Tom C. Hayes, Will Ward, Jackson Beal, Dr. Parks M. King. Honorary pallbearers will be George Hiss, Baxter Ross and the elders of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Graham was the son of Archibald and Anna McLean Graham. He was born April 1, 1842, at Fayetteville and received his early education in the private schools of that town. The first position he held was with the Cape Fear National Bank.
CAME HERE IN 1872.
In July, 1862, when he was 20 years old, he joined McNeill's cavalry and was a member of the Fifth Company North Carolina Cavalry, under General Rufus Barringer, later serving as a courier under General Gordon and J. E. B. Stewart, Fitzhugh lee and Wade Hampton. He was with General Joseph E. Johnston when he surrendered at Greensboro.
Following the war, Mr. Graham was employed by the firm of Williams and Murchison in the their New York offices. Later he was transferred to Wilmington, from which city he moved to Charlotte in 1872 and engaged in the cotton business with John D. Williams, Jr., of Fayetteville. He was connected with the First National Bank for a number of years. During the latter part of his life he conducted an insurance and brokerage business.

Mr. Graham married Miss Eliza Owen Barry, of Wilmington in 1868. She died in 1901 after bearing three children, of who is Edward Kidder Graham, became the University of North Carolina's most distinguished and beloved president. Miss Mary wen Graham and Archibald Graham, Jr., were the other two children. A brother, Dr. Alexander Graham, of this city and a grandson, Edward Kidder Graham, of Chapel Hill, survive.
Mr. Graham was for many years a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church and was the oldest elder when he died.
