The hospital was originally named the Maine Insane Hospital and finally the Augusta Mental Health Institute, operating from 1840 - 2004. A quarter of all patients (11,647 total) died at this institution. The hospital didn't note burials. Some patients were returned to their families. some buried on the premises and others in pauper graves in various cemeteries. A memorial to the forgotten who died there was unveiled in 2015.
