Marilyn Guffey Lancaster, age 87, of Chattanooga, TN passed away in her home on January 28, 2024. She was born in Lim Rock, AL, but later after moving around the area in childhood graduated valedictorian at her high school in Stevenson, AL. She met her husband Sanford H. Lancaster, Jr. in Stevenson, and they relocated to Chattanooga, TN where they lived throughout the rest of their lives. She spent most of her adult life as a homemaker, but later worked for several years at Wal-Mart prior to retirement. Marilyn loved to spend time with family, read, find good deals, and garden. Family remembers her as being kind, intelligent, never missing anything, and truly a force of nature.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Gertrude Guffey, her husband Sanford Lancaster Jr., four sisters and a brother.
She is survived by her sons Sanford (Lisa) Lancaster, Terrell (Donna) Lancaster Sr. and her sister Violet Stewart; grandchildren Samantha (Sam) Morales, Terrell Kevan Lancaster, Sanford Ryan (Merry) Lancaster Sr., Lauren (Justin) Thomas, Casey Orrell, and Devan Lancaster; eleven great grandchildren.
Marilyn was the matriarch of her family, and she will be greatly missed. Family takes comfort in Revelations 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00-8:00 P.M. and Friday from 12 -1 PM at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road. Her funeral will be at 1 PM Friday at the funeral home followed by burial at the National Cemetery.
