James Vernon Cleveland
July 11, 1933 - January 26, 2024

James Vernon Cleveland, currently of Hahira, passed away peacefully at Smith Northview Hospital following a brief illness on January 26, 2024, at the age of 90.

He was born in Miller County, Georgia on July 11, 1933, to John Sam Cleveland and Mary Cook Cleveland who preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sue Willis Cleveland.

James worked as an insurance agent with Independent Life and retired after over forty years of service.
He was an active member of Dawson Street Methodist Church in Thomasville for over sixty years.
He was affectionally known as Pawpaw to his grandchildren and Uncle Bud to his siblings and their families, and he always enjoyed time spent with them. He had nicknames for most all his nieces, nephews, and many of his children's friends and always got a kick about teasing them about it.

He moved to The Orchard in Hahira in 2022 and was able to continue living independently there. He made many new friends, and we are thankful for the staff that helped care for him. Special thanks as well to the staff at Smith Northview Hospital for their excellent care and support.

Survivors include Tish Barrett of Valdosta, Linda (Alan) McClure of Milledgeville, and Jim (Beth) Cleveland of Valdosta. Grandchildren: Jay (Kelly) Barrett, Alyssa McClure, Drew Cleveland, and Caroline Cleveland. Great-grandchildren: Crawford Barrett, Carson Barrett, and Attaline Barrett. Sisters, as well as in-laws: Sue Cleveland Smith, Carolyn Cleveland Hillard, Sandra Cleveland Sirmons, Janice Cleveland, Dianna Cleveland, Hank Gray, and Margie Willis (Oliver) Jones. As well as many nieces and nephews

He was also preceded in death by his in-laws Guy and Margaret Willis, as well as siblings: Libby (Guy) Hatcher, Dude Cleveland, Elosie Gray, Bobby Cleveland, Rita (Wayne) Holt, and Donnie Cleveland and a sister-in-law Carolyn Willis Mims.

The family will have a private burial service at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Saturday, February 10, 2024 followed by a memorial service at 11 am at the Allen and Allen Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held immediately following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in his memory be made to Dawson Street Methodist Church, 1132 North Dawson Street, Thomasville, GA 31792.
