Giuseppina "Josephine" Bufalo was born on 13 April 1901, in Starkville, Colorado, to Andrea Bufalo and Pietronella "Calogera" Petralia. Her parents and older sisters, Anna and Francesca had immigrated to the United States from Palazzo Adriano, Sicily, three years before her birth.

In 1907, her father, Andrea died. Her mother, Pietronella remarried soon after his death. Pietronella married Salvatore Montalbano, with whom she had two more daughters: Carmela and Maria Grazia (Mary Grace. Sometime between 1910 and 1913, Josephine's mother died.

On 29 June 1913, she married Giuseppe "Joseph" Barbara, in Trinidad, Colorado. Together they had four children, Ralph, Mary Grace, Carrie, and Andrew.

Josephine died of nephritis, on 10 April 1929, in Trinidad.
