Retired Attorney Dies Last Evening

Richard Foxcroft Broadbent, prominent retired attorney, residing at 119 North 14th street, succumbed at Mercy Hospital. Death was believed caused from a fall, sustained Sunday, July 9, at his home.

The deceased, who was 78 years of age, had been a patient at the hospital since his fall, suffering from a fractured hip.

Mr. Broadbent had been in the law business in this city since 1889, when he opened his office here. He served for a number of years as attorney for the Elwood Board of School Trustees and also was deputy prosecuting attorney for Madison county for twelve years, and served as city attorney for eight years. He was a member of the Madison County Bar Association.

Mr. Broadbent graduated from Spiceland Academy and also attended DePauw University. One of the well-remembered highlights in his life was when he assisted in laying the cornerstone of the Elwood Post Office building. He was also considered an authority on banking laws and public utilities.

Mr. Broadbent was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Scottish Rite, and the Shriners. He was also a life member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and a member of the Quaker church.

The deceased was the son of Robert M. and Martha Jane Broadbent, and was born on June 26, at Ogden, Indiana.

He was united in marriage in 1891 to Mary L. Pickering, who preceded him in death in 1937.

There are four children surviving, and include Dr. Mary Broadbent Platz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Miss Adah Broadbent, art teacher in the Cincinnati, Ohio, schools; Dr. Oliver P. Broadbent, Jacksonville, Florida; and Richard F. Broadbent, Jr., of New York City, New York. There are three grandchildren.

The body was removed to the Copher & Fesler Funeral Home, where it will remain for funeral services. Rev. Homer Eshelman, pastor of the Harmony church at Leisure, will officiate at services at the funeral home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning. Burial will follow in the City cemetery.
