John "Doc" Pace was born in Montgomery County, near Red Oak, Iowa on October 28, 1887, the son of John Woodford Mitchell Pace and Susan Jane Gunter Pace, and was nicknamed Doc since childhood.

The paternal grandparents were John Wesley Pace and Mary Jane Smith, and the maternal grandparents were George and Nancy Webb Gunter.

Doc came from a family of then children. He was married to Verdie Irene Walker, the only child of Abram H. Walker and Mary E. Mae South, on December 21, 1910 in Creston, Iowa. It was a double ceremony with John Platt, a cousin of Verdie, and Ida Shields.

Doc and Verdie had seven children: Rex, Abram, Dale, Jean, John, Vernon, and Denzel.
