"Crack" Thompson was the son of James Franklin Thompson and Mary Emeline Green. He began working in the coal mines at age 11 and became a die-hard union man who participated in the miners' march to Blair Mountain in 1921. He married Rachel Williams in Winifrede, WV, Sept. 5, 1909, and had four children - John, Margaret (Brooks), James, and Carl.
