Wendell heard the cherished words "well done, good and faithful servant" Wednesday, Jan. 17 at approximately 10 p.m., and no more faithful servant has there been. Services will be Monday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Happy Methodist Church, 2300 Happy West Road in Happy with Gene Hudgins, pastor, officiating and assisted by Tom Stribling, retired pastor of Happy Methodist Church, and Rev. Dr. Stephen W. Rankin. Burial will follow in Happy Cemetery. Public viewing will begin at 12:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Brooks Funeral Home, 1702 5th Avenue in Canyon and the family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday.
Wendell Ray Brown was born June 15, 1943, in Wheeler County to Mozelle Seago Brown and Cecil Valdee Brown. He attended the first eight grades in Lela where he finished first in his class and swore he would not be the valedictorian or salutatorian of his high school graduating class because he didn't want to give another speech. He graduated from Shamrock High School in 1961.
Always a loyal and active member of the Methodist church in any community in which he lived, Wendell attended the Lela Methodist Church and Glen Davis Memorial Methodist Church in Dozier when a new pastor was called from Kansas in 1962. Along with that new pastor came a young lady named Susan Rankin. Wendell and Susan were married at Glen Davis Methodist Church on December 27, 1964, and he never stopped caring for her. Michael Keith was born on January 25, 1969, and Kara Michelle was born March 1, 1971.
In 1979, while living in Chillicothe, God provided an opportunity for full-time ministry at Ceta Canyon Methodist Camp and Retreat Center outside Happy. Wendell's parents had served as caretakers at Ceta Canyon in the late 1960s/early 1970s, and Susan had envisioned her furniture arranged in their Ceta Canyon home, although she never shared that with Wendell until the opportunity to live in that home presented itself. For almost 30 years, Wendell and Susan served God's kingdom through their ministry SHOWING thousands of individuals what the good news and love of Christ are about.
Wendell retired in 2008, and he and Susan moved to Canyon where they had been enjoying activities at West Texas A&M University since Keith and Kara were in college there. Although neither of them pursued higher education, loyal Buffs they were and rarely a football, basketball, volleyball, or softball game took place without their attendance. They were named the WTSU Parents of the Year in 1992.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Elizabeth and Rev. Cecil Rankin, brothers and sisters in law Joy and E. Doyle Brown, Sandy and Donnie Brown, brothers in law Taylor Douglass and Gary Rankin, and sister-in-law Karen Brown. He is survived by the love of his life, Susan; son Keith of Canyon, daughter and son-in-law Kara and Kevin Brown of Groom, and brother Jerry of Amarillo. He is also survived by Susan's siblings Sheryl and Duane Rankin of Cimarron, KS, Karen Rankin of Overland Park, KS and Joni and Dr. Steve Rankin of Arkansas City, KS as well as many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Wunkel.
Keith, Kara and Kevin express an undying gratitude to the staff of Wheeler Nursing and Rehabilitation for their care of Wendell and Susan. Christ's love is witnessed at all times in that facility.
