Susan is the 8th child of ten, born to Col. Elisha Newcomb and Sybil Clara Symonds. Elisha served in the Massachusetts Militia, thus his rank as a Colonel. Susan married William Wallace Chase on 20 Feb. 1851 in Brighton, Maine. Susan & Wm. only had one child, Harvey Lewis Chase (1862-1929). Read Wm.'s bio for the details on Harvey. Some census records show Wm.'s sister, Ellen Marie Chase-Moore was living with them. As to authenticating Susan's middle name has been proven, and also a mix up with the name Elizabeth or Ellen. Susan's death certificate has her name as recorded as Mrs. Susan Ellen Chase. Susan is our first Newcomb ancestor connected to the Chase lineage. We have information from ancestry records and the following book as a source for the Newcomb Family: "Andrew Newcomb, 1618-1686, and his Descendants", a revised edition of "Genealogical Memoir of the Newcomb Family". Susan is found on page 377. Her name is recorded as Susan Elizabeth Newcomb. So somewhere along the line her name was recorded on the death certificate was mistaken for the sister-in-law's name. I hope I have documented this mix up so anyone would understand how it came about. I will gladly accept any corrections or additions upon documentation for them.
