Kay was born on May 13, 1943 in Corsicana, Texas, to Alice Airheart and James E. "Jim" Gaston, who at that time lived in Hillsboro. The family moved to Trinidad shortly thereafter. Preceding her in death are her parents, Alice and Jim Gaston; sister Judy Story; and sister-in-law Mary Frank Gaston.
Kay is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Randolph "Randy" Carter; daughter Jennifer Carter Davin and son-in-law Philip Davin of Tyler; grandson Zachary Davin of College Station; brother Dr. Jerry Gaston of Bryan; brother-in-law Larry Story of Ft. Worth; sister-in-law Carolyn Kemp Carter of Richardson; as well as her beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous other dear family members.
Kay graduated salutatorian from Trinidad High School in 1961. She was a basketball player, majorette and involved in her church while in high school. She graduated from Henderson County Junior College in 1963. Kay met Randy Carter from Brownsboro while attending HCJC and they married on September 5, 1964. The next year she graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a BS in Elementary Education. This launched her 38 ½ year career in the classroom. She taught in Brownsboro, Trinidad, Mt. Pleasant, Carthage and Henderson. She loved teaching, and she loved her students, many of whom she kept in contact with through the years. Kay was blessed by many long-time, cherished friendships with co-workers from each school where she taught.
She enjoyed many years of being the Nursery Supervisor at Henderson First Methodist Church, babysitting for several families, teaching community night school classes, and working at two different dress shops in Henderson. Once Randy retired, they moved to Tyler. She homeschooled and tutored several children and once again, made more precious friends.
Kay loved to shop, she loved decorating her home- especially for Christmas, she loved the USA and Texas and was very patriotic, she loved to travel, and she loved spending time with family and friends. But the greatest joy was being Nana to her grandson, Zach.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, friendship and faith. Kay Carter will be greatly missed.
