Melvin L. Cox, age 86, passed away on Holy Saints Day. Mel grew up in Selma with six siblings.

He joined the U.S. Navy one week after the bombing at Pearl Harbor. He served aboard the Destroyer USS Brown and saw action all over the Pacific. At the end of WWII, he came home to the Valley. Mel then started a family of his own.

Mel wore many hats in his life. He started his career with AT&T as a lineman, installer-repairman, and as a tester. He retired from AT&T after 35 years of service. Every lineman or installer would have spoken with Mel down at "the frame."

Mel was also owner of The Pit Stop, a slot car hangout where people of all ages enjoyed racing their slot cars. Mel's true passion was four-wheeling. His grandchildren all call him "Papa Jeep" His road trip to the Yukon up the Alcan highway amazed us all.

Mel loved reading and was an avid reader of western literature and the stock market.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Cottonwood Court (Oakdale Heights) for providing excellent care for the last one and a half years of his life. Words cannot begin to express the gratitude and appreciation we feel for making his life more enjoyable.

Mel is preceded in death by his parents, James and Cleo Cox; sister, Luella Lyster; brothers, James T. Cox and Norman Cox.

Mel is survived by his sisters, Evalyn Ghilardi and Bernice Ford; brother, Vernon Cox, and his children, Glenna Miller, David Cox and his wife Donna Salwasser, Dora Dong and her husband Stephen, Lowell Cox, and Dennis Cox and his wife Josephine; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at Stephens & Bean Chapel on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at 11:00 a.m.

Remembrances may be made to donor's favorite charity.
