He joined the Army in 1950 as a Sergeant serving as an ammo foreman during the Korean War, where he earned the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Stars, a commendation and a Presidential Unit Citation. On December 10, 2016, he was awarded the South Korea's Ambassador Peace Medal.

The newlyweds settled in Farr West where they were members of the Farr West Third Ward. Bud and Dot had sixty-two years together before her death on June 26, 2013.
He worked at and retired from Hill Air Force Base. He also enjoyed driving air boats for Pin Tail Duck Club.
Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing, but his favorite hobby was riding four-wheelers. He also loved helping with cutting and bailing hay.
