Dixie became a pioneer in her career, which spanned the entire state of South Carolina. She served as a public health nurse on the county and state level with the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). She became one of the early Nurse Practitioners in South Carolina, providing prenatal care at the Lancaster County Health Department and several surrounding counties. She also served as Nursing Supervisor later in her career at the Lancaster County Health Department. Ultimately, she was a Nurse Consultant at DHEC and later the Director of the Division for Acute Disease Epidemiology before retiring in 2011. To show her love of nursing and her dedication to her profession, she has left her legacy through the establishment of an endowed scholarship for nursing students at USC Lancaster. Her family expresses great pride that her wish to help future nurses is fulfilled and that she will be perpetually honored by The Dixie F. Roberts Endowed Nursing Scholarship.
