William FitzAlan, Lord of Oswestry, was a nobleman of Breton ancestry. He was a major landowner, a Marcher lord with large holdings in Shropshire, where he was the Lord of Oswestry, as well as in Norfolk and Sussex. He was also High Sheriff of Shropshire.

William's younger brother, Walter FitzAlan (1090-1177), became ancestor of the Royal House of Stuart.

William was the eldest son and heir of Alan fitz Flaad (1060-1120), a Breton noble whose family were closely associated with the sacred environs of Dol-de-Bretagne. William's mother was Avelina de Hesdin. (Her father was Ernulf (Arnulf) de Hesdin.)

William's first wife was Christiana. Their children were :
William FitzAlan, his Heir.
Christiana, m. Hugh Pantulf, 4th Baron of Wem.

His second wife was Isabel de Say (1132-1199) whom he married in 1156. She was the sole heiress of Helias de Say. They had no children, but Isabel had issue with her first husband, Geoffrey II de Vere.
