James Ronald "Jim" Fretwell
1939 - 2023
VETERAN

James Ronald Fretwell died early Sunday morning, December 10, 2023, after a third battle with cancer. Jim was born on April 9, 1939, in Cumberland, Maryland, the son of James Thomas and Twila Virginia Cosner Fretwell. Jim went to Allegany High School in Cumberland.

Shortly after leaving high school, he joined the United States Army and earned his GED. After three years in the Army, Jim moved to Washington DC where he met Barbara Rebecca "Bonnie" White, who was also from Cumberland, on a blind date. They were married on July 1, 1961. His two sons were born shortly afterwards.

Jim worked many jobs throughout his life. He had a varied career at places like 7-Eleven, Brown and Williamson, and elsewhere. He had an incredible work ethic and always did all he could to earn a living. When he retired, he was a manager for Duron Paint stores in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Jim loved weightlifting, riding his bike, and bowling.

He met the missionaries in 1979, and joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his family. As an active member of the Church he served in many callings throughout his life. He served in a bishopric, as a service missionary for five years, and was a temple worker at the time of his death. He loved greeting people at church and made all feel welcome. He had a rough exterior but a very generous nature, and he loved to help others.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bonnie; two sons, James Jr., of Maryland; and Eric, of Lehi, Utah; daughter-in-law, Mimi; his granddaughter, Leah; and his sister, Janice.
