Elizabeth Mann, daughter of Richard Mann and Amey Tilsley, was born 12 April 1806 (according to burial record and Middlesex Parish Registers) in Spitalfields Parish, Middlesex, England (according to 1861 and 1871 census). She was christened 3 August 1806 at Saint Leonard's Parish Church in Shoreditch, Middlesex, England (according to Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials on ancestry.com).

On 3, 10, and 17 July 1825, Elizabeth Mann and James Barnard published marriage banns at Saint John Hackney church on Lower Clapton Road, Middlesex, England (according to Church of England Marriages and Banns on ancestry.com) noting their intention to marry. Elizabeth Mann and James Barnard married 20 May 1828 in the neighboring parish of Saint Mary the Virgin in Leyton, Essex, England. [Note: the General Register Office death record for Elizabeth Mann Barnard explicitly states that she was the widow of James Horatio Barnard, silk weaver.]

Elizabeth Mann and James Horatio Barnard had three known children:

(1) James Horatio Barnard (1834-1877), husband of Clara Bambury (1835-1903)
(2) Elizabeth Jane Barnard (1836-1890), wife of Owen Skinner Ingram (1833-1875) and James Kerrins (1833-1908)
(3) David Barnard (~1842-1913), husband of Edith Mann (1869-1958)

In the 1851 census of England, Elizabeth Barnard (age 44, married) was listed as the head of household at 8 Islington Place in Islington, Middlesex, along with her children James (age 16, wax flower maker), Elizabeth (age 15, wax flower maker), David (age 9), and Ann Dover (age 28, visitor, braid worker). Although Elizabeth was listed as being married, her husband James Horatio Barnard was not listed with the family (here, or anywhere later), suggesting that he may have died between the conception of their youngest child David in 1841 and the 1851 census.

In the 1861 census of England, Elizabeth Barnard (age 55, married, fancy shop woman) was listed in the household of her son, James H. Barnard (age 26, confectioner) living at 12 Charles Street in Mile End New Town, Middlesex. Other family members listed were wife Clara (age 26), brother David (age 19, baker), children Clara (age 4) and James H. (age 2), and Rose Bartar (age 16, servant). Elizabeth's husband, James Horatio Barnard, was not listed with the family.

In the "Selected Poor Law Removal and Settlement Records of London, 1698-1839" on ancestry.com, there is a removal order dated 21 January 1869 for Elizabeth Barnard, aged 62. The legal document states that complaints had been lodged against Elizabeth Barnard, pauper, who "has come to inhabit and is now inhabiting in the said Parish of Saint Mary, Newington [Surrey], endeavouring to settle there contrary to law" and ordering her to be returned to her last legal settlement in the Parish of Shoreditch, County of Middlesex.

In the 1871 census of England, Elizabeth Barnard (age 64, widow) was listed in the household of her son James Barnard (age 35, confectioner) living at the corner of Essex [now Blythe] Street and O.B.G. [Old Bethnal Green] Street. Also listed in the household were wife "Elizabeth" [error for Clara] (age 35), and children Clara (age 14), James (age 12), Elizabeth (age 9), Amy (age 6), Edwin (age 5), John (age 3), and Emily (age 2 months). [Note: the General Register Office birth record for Emily Susan Barnard shows her birth as 20 January 1871 at 1 Essex Street, Bethnal Green, Middlesex. 1 Essex Street [now Blythe Street] was also the 1869 address for a pub known as the "Falcon" (see pubology.co.uk and https://pubshistory.com/LondonPubs/BethnalGreen/Falcon.shtml ]

I have been unable to locate Elizabeth Barnard and her family in the 1881 census of England.

Each of the marriage records for Elizabeth's three children list their father as "James Horatio Barnard" and either "weaver" or "silk weaver." None of these records list their father as being deceased:

(1) James Horatio Barnard (~1834-1877) to Clara Bambury (1835-1903), married 17 March 1856 at Saint George Bloomsbury, Middlesex; father listed as "James Horatio Barnard, Silk Weaver"
(2) Elizabeth Jane Barnard (1836-1890) to Owen Skinner Ingram (1833-1875), married 12 February 1854 at Saint George Bloomsbury, Middlesex; father listed as "James Horatio Barnard, Weaver"
(3) David Barnard (~1842-1913) to Edith Mann (1851-1895), married 2 April 1868 at Saint Leonard's, Shoreditch, Middlesex; father listed as "James Horatio Barnard, Weaver"

In the "Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, London, England, 1764-1930" on ancestry.com is an entry for Elizabeth Barnard, age 82, admitted 17 August 1887 to the City of London Bow Road Workhouse. Her last residence before admittance was 9 Printing House Lane, City of London. Elizabeth Barnard died at the workhouse 11 May 1890. Her discharge from the workhouse was listed as 11 May 1890 with the annotation "Dead."

The General Register Office death record shows Elizabeth Barnard, died 11 May 1890 (age 84) at City of London Union Infirmary, registered at Mile End Old Town, London. The record shows she was "Widow of James Horatio Barnard, Silk Weaver, Journeyman, of Printing House Lane, City of London." The informant for the death record was Elizabeth's daughter-in-law, C[lara Bambury Barnard] Shortland, wife of her deceased son James Horatio Barnard (~1834-1877). Clara was living at 6C Peabody Buildings, Blackfriar's. [Note: Clara Shortland was listed in the 1891 census of England living at 6C Block, Peabody Buildings in Lambeth, London.] [GRO Ref: BARNARD, ELIZABETH, 1890 Jun Quarter in MILE END OLD TOWN Volume 01C Page 328, Age at Death: 84]

The Abney Park Cemetery Index 2005 (online) shows that Elizabeth Barnard was buried five days later on 16 May 1890 in the same grave with her older sister, Amey Susannah Mann Tyrrell (1803-1868) at Grave Location F02, Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, Middlesex, England.
