Mrs. Rebecca Mayes, a descended of pioneer Claiborne County families, and the widow of Newt Mayes, died Tuesday night at the home of her son, Oda Charles Mayes in Detroit, Mich. She was 84.
A native of Claiborne County near Goin, Mrs. Mayes was the former Miss Rebecca Keck.
She was a member of a family of 16 children. She lived to see all of her brothers and sisters pass away. She lived near Goin and was a member of Pleasant Point Baptist Church there.
After the death of Mr. Mayes, a farmer and lifelong resident of Claiborne County, Mrs. Mayes went to Detroit, Mich. where she made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Stella Dyer for a few years and later with her son.
The body will arrive in Knoxville Friday and will be removed to Roberts Mortuary, where funeral services have been set for 2:30 pm Saturday. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Knoxville. There are many surviving relatives among the Mayes and Keck families residing in Knox Claiborne and adjacent counties. A spokesman for the family said yesterday all of Mrs. Mayes brothers sisters and in-laws are deceased.
Survivors include her son, Oda Charles Mayes, Detroit Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. R. H. Wolfenbarger, Mrs. Ed Miller, both of Knoxville; Mrs. Clarence Dyer, Detroit; Mrs. Jim Ford of Goin, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
