Letter addressed to Mr Lewis Blackwell of Bryantsville, Lawrence, IN
From Gideon & Elizabeth Blackwell Crawfordsville, Montgomery, IN
26 Feb 1855
Dear Brother,
We are all in usual health, we stopped here because the place seemed healthy & the chances for
(unreadable) about as good as I could expect. Corn 50cts, flour 9cts, bacon 7cts, and wages 1 Dol per day. Cutting cord wood 62cts. But against all I foot all expenses, but so it is, we are here & must make a living, which by the blessings of God, we can do if we are blessed with health...........I want you to write and tell us all about times, how they are, etc. Tell us all that would interest us. We are living in the country near Crawfordsville. If any of you comes this way, you will call......
Our boy John left us three or four days since by R.R. and his mother and all of us are uneasy about him. If he's in your reach, take him and control him & do a brothers part & you will be rewarded for it, if I should not be able to reward you. Write all about it & all about the friends, etc. ...write soon..............
