A native of Alabama, he had lived in Asheville since 1949. He was a civil engineering graduate of Auburn University. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Geological Survey and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was an elder at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Bomberger Johnson; a son, Dr. George Johnson of Morganton; two sisters, Mary Adams of Alexander City, Ala., and Bobadilla Courtney of Opelika, Ala.; five brothers, Jack Johnson of Birmingham, John and James Johnson of Opelika, William Otis Johnson of Virginia Beach, Oel Johnson of Hilton Head Island; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange, Ga.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home.
