He came to Fayetteville in 1840, and married Amanda Malvina Brodie on September 22, 1942. They were the parents of eleven children.
He built several brick buildings on the square, and ran a dry goods store for many years.
In the late 1800's, he and his wife were among Fayetteville's most public spirited citizens, they donated land to build the City Hospital, and aided various enterprises including Sophia Sawyer's Fayetteville Female Seminary.
Burial is in Evergreen Cemetery.
