John McCarthy was the son of Thomas & Percy (Soule) McCarthy. He was the fourth son of 14 children. Educated in the district schools, Onondaga Academy, and Georgetown College, he entered business in his father's retail dry good store in Salina, remaining there as clerk until after the death of his father, when he became a partner of his brother Dennis in the ownership and control of the business.
He married Elizabeth C. Toole on 24 June 1846 in New York City.
His widowed mother-in-law and now step-mother, Anna (Cronly) Toole-McCarthy, lived with them in the 1855-1865 census in Syracuse. Children:
1. Thomas I. McCarthy, 1847–wed Elizabeth Cayon, Baltimore
2. Anna Mason [John J.] Town, 1849–1930
3. Percy E., 1852–1925, whose first husband was Theodore Dissel and whose second Peter A. Roche
4. John Cronley McCarthy, 1855–1929, wed Zollie Bustin, Camden, Miss.
