Robert McCarthy died May 23 in Geneva, where he had been in a sanitarium for some time. He was 75 years old, and for half a century had been the foremost hardware dealer of Central New York. Born in the town of Salina, now the First Ward, Mr. McCarthy was educated at Yates Polytechnic in Chittenango and at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. A prominent Democrat, he was never a politician. In 1861 he went through the state with the Rev. Thomas K. Beecher and Henry Ward Beecher and delivered speeches for the maintenance of the Union. Mr. McCarthy was a communicant of St. John's Cathedral, and played a prominent part in many Catholic charities and benevolent institutions. He is survived by his wife and by three children, Mrs. Fred Pelletier and Mrs. Holland Holt of New York City, and Eugene McCarthy of this city, and by a brother, John McCarthy of Green Street.

Prior to funeral services at St. John's Cathedral, his body lay in state in the parlors of the Globe Hotel, after which it was taken to the Cathedral, where a low mass was celebrated by the Rev. Michael Clune. During the services, Mrs. John Clancy sang Gounod's "Ave Maria", and as the casket was being borne out of the church she sang "There Is A green Hill Far Away".

From the Syracuse evening Herald May 34, 1902, and the Syracuse Post Standard May 28, 1902.
