John Long was a private in the 7th SC Cavalry, Company D, Gary's Brigade. He was killed in action in a skirmish at Riddell's Shop, Virginia on June 13, 1864. He had three children with Medora Ray Long: Thomas Edwin and Carrie Elizabeth survived; one child, M. Josephine, died at less than one year old.
