He was born on March 18, 1933, in Greasy Creek, to the late Arthur and Mae Rymer Merrell. Throughout life, Fred enjoyed spending time outdoors throughout the mountains of Polk County and was a veteran of the United States Army. A few of his fondest memories include the many trips and adventures with his family. His family was the love of his life, and he cherished each moment he was blessed to have spent with them.
He retired from Duracell after many years of dedicated service where he made lifelong friends. Fred was loved by all and will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of having known him.
In addition to his parents, Arthur and Mae Rymer Merrell, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Beatrice (Wayne) Wilcox, Bonnie (Russell) Wilcox, Amos Merrell, and Arthur Leonas Merrell; one brother-in-law, J.M. Lowe.
Left to cherish the many memories include his beloved wife of 64 years, Una Couey Merrell; cherished son, Greg (Jill) Merrell; adored granddaughters, Halee (Luke) Womac, and Holly (Punk) Powell; great-grandchildren, Weston Powell, Ivy Powell, and Lawson Womac; one sister, Minnie Lowe. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends also survive.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023, in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home, with Punk Powell presiding.
