He was born April 3, 1943 in Catawba County to the late Albert and Edna Austin Smith.
Gary was a United States Army Veteran and a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Conover. He retired from the banking industry after 24 years of service, was a member of AmVets Post 76, St. Peter's LLL, the Golden Agers, and a past member of the Hickory Jaycees.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Larry Preslar and Jimmy Sigmon.

A service to celebrate Gary's life will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Conover. Rev. Eric Hauss will officiate. Burial with military honors by AmVets of Hickory Post 76 will follow in the church cemetery.
