HICKORY - Edna Austin Smith, 87, of Hickory, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009, at Lutheran Home-West in Hickory.
Mrs. Smith was born June 4, 1921, in Catawba County and was a daughter of the late Clyde D. and Errol Poovey Austin.
She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church, the Women of the Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She retired from Sears.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A. Russell Smith, and a brother, Herman Austin.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Gary Dean Smith and wife, Patricia, of Conover; a daughter, Gloria S. Preslar and husband, Larry, of Columbia, S.C.; a granddaughter, Amy Preslar Seif; a grandson, Todd D. Smith and his wife, Susan S. Smith; a great-granddaughter, Carly Paige Seif; and sisters, Joyce A. Steele and husband, Charles, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Evelyn A. Huffman of Hickory.
A service of remembrance will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, with the Rev. David Keck officiating and assisted by Vicar Ingrid Chenoweth. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory.
