Obituary is from the Welch Funeral Home (Warsaw, Va.) website, posted October 18, 2023:

James Franklin "Jimmy" Jewell, 99 wonderful years old, passed away rather suddenly on Monday, October 16, 2023. Jimmy was born in Lake, Virginia to the late Lloyd Marvin Jewell, Sr. and the late Maud Marion McNeal Jewell. He was the widower of his beloved wife Rebecca Jones Jewell. Jimmy was a skilled carpenter and boat builder and worked for many years at the Coan River Marina, as well as worked farming his family farm. He was a lifelong member of Melrose United Methodist Church and a very proud WWII veteran of the United States Army.

Proud of his family roots on the Northern Neck, Jimmy loved working on the family land and also close to the water as a boat builder. He loved working with his hands so much that when he retired from boat building – he didn't retire from boat building. He began to make model boats, and his skill and attention to detail made almost everyone who saw one want one.

Jimmy always said he never had a job he didn't like. His love of work began at an early age when, as a young boy, he would travel to Reedville with his father to sell produce door-to-door from the family farm. As a young man, he was inducted into the Army in April 1945 and served in Japan for two years as an Airplane Line Chief, supervising 15 airplane mechanics. Returning home in April 1947, he made his way down to Watkin's Store in Lottsburg. There he ran into his brother Berkley who asked if he wanted a job hauling tomatoes with him out of Walnut Point, which he happily did. Later he was asked by Henry Stephens to be a carpenter at his Railway on the Coan River (later the Coan River Marina); he had no prior experience in boat building, but as with most things he put his mind to, he excelled at carpentry work and remained in that job until he retired.

Jimmy was a loving family man. He is survived by his two children Linda Jewell Hayes (Bob) and Frank C. Jewell; his grandson Jason Hayes (Jenn); his great-grandchildren: Jacob Hayes, Stephen Hayes and Addison Hayes; his brother Richard Jewell (Irene); his sister-in-law Anne Balderson Jewell; many nieces and nephews; and many friends, neighbors and his church family. Jimmy was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife of 53 years, Rebecca; his granddaughter, close friend and caregiver, Jessica Lynn Hayes; his infant great-granddaughter Rebecca; and his siblings: Berkley Jewell (Hilda); Hilda Jewell; Pauline Swann (Irving); Elise Murphy (Charles); Eldine Mould (George); Lloyd M. "L.M." Jewell (Irma Lee); Annette Newman (Milton); Maxine Beatley (Freddie); and Robert Jewell (Anne).

A funeral service for Jimmy will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Melrose United Methodist Church with the Reverend Fred Okello and the Reverend Kenny Wayne Newsome officiating. Pallbearers are grandson Jason Hayes; nephews: Lee Beatley, Kenny Beatley, Marty Jewell, and Charles Swann; great-nephews Tommy Cash and Johnny Cash; and good friend and fishing buddy Almon Newsome.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and Jimmy will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Rebecca and near his precious granddaughter Jessica and baby Rebecca. Following the interment, the family will host a light supper in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Jimmy's loving memory to the Melrose Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 150, Lottsburg, VA 22511.
