Shirley Jane (Clevenger) Griffitt, 88, of rural Columbus, died Sunday, October 8th, 2023, at Medicalodge in Columbus. She was born on May 2, 1935, to Redmond and Florence (Smith) Clevenger in Persia, Iowa.

Shirley and Raymond Griffitt were united in marriage on October 29, 1949, at Oswego, Kansas. Shirley was a loving wife of just a few days short of 72 years.

Shirley worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons from 1967 to 1991.

She was a devoted mother of seven, grandmother of fifteen, great-grandmother of 35, and great-great grandmother of six. Shirley and Raymond enjoyed trips to Branson and spending time at Gray's Ranch on Grand Lake. Cooking for family and enjoying family dinners with loved ones filled Shirley's kitchen most Sundays.

Shirley is survived by six children: Janet (Kerry) McKinzie, Diana (Chester) Hill, Lela Gaye (Steve) Slay, Kenney (Linda) Griffitt, all of Columbus; Mary Plunkett of Paragould, Arkansas; and Sheryl (Duane) Schneider of Asbury, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren: Tessa (Jeff) Clark, Melissa (Don) Proffitt, Melinda (Justin) Cox of Columbus, Jess Plunkett of Illinois, Jason Plunkett of Paragould, AR, Kristan (Jacob) Plunkett-Partlow of Jonesboro, AR, Steve Schneider of Gardner, Rick (Katie) Schneider of Joplin, James (Barb) Hill of Overland Park, Amanda (Blake) Burns, Cassandra Hill-Durbin of Columbus, Marietta (Danny) Nickelson of Girard, Helen (Adam) Holland of Pittsburg, Lindsey (Paul) Morris of Columbus, and Travis (Kayla) Griffitt of North Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by a brother, Bill (Jean) Clevenger and brother-in-law Billy Sam Thompson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by husband Raymond, two sons Raymond Edward and Leland Ray, one daughter Sandra Lynn, and son-in-law Greg Plunkett. Also preceding her in death were sisters, Joyce Tyree, Neva George, Erma Thompson, and Vinita Allen, and one brother Redmond Clevenger.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM, Wednesday, October 11th at McKee Cemetery near Hallowell, KS. Pastor Neil Martin will officiate. Visitation will take place from 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Tuesday, October 10th at Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus.
