Montana Governor, Politician. He served as the 19th Governor of Montana from January 5, 1981 to January 2, 1989, and was a prominent American politician. After enlisting in the United States Army, he earned a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree from the University of Montana. He began his political career as a member of the Montana House of Representatives in 1958 and was named to the Legislative Council the next year. In 1961, he served as the House minority whip. He became the president of the Grain Growers Association in 1965 and was appointed Commissioner of State Lands in 1969, a position he held until April 1976. He was then elected the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Montana, serving from January 3, 1977, until January 5, 1981. During his tenure as governor, he introduced his "Build Montana" economic plan and the popular traveling "Capital for a Day" events. He had three children with his wife, First Lady Jean Schwinden.
