Silas "he has been a continual resident of Wisconsin since 1847, with the exception of three years he spent on the Pacific Coast..."(History of Sauk Co).

Sila's grandson from his second wife, Vern Hoxie, informed me in 2000 that he was in the possession of a bible with the following inscription in it, "Presented to Silas P. Hoxie by his brother B. S. (Benjamin Sargent) Hoxie on his departure for California March 30, 1853". Information from John Paul Hoxie was that Silas went by wagon with several others and his father Allen Hoxie to California in the year 1850 (poss. error in date). All turned back due to the desert ahead but Allen and Silas continued by splitting the wagon into 2- 2 wheeled carts and each taking one of the horses. They panned for gold for several months and saved enough to buy ship passage back to Maine via Panama. They then walked across the Isthmus of Panama and boarded another ship for New York.

Married First Wife: Elmina L. Cass 25 Dec 1858 in Richland County, Wisconsin.

1860 U S Census: Silas "S. P." Hoxey (sp) age 28y b. @ 1832 Maine and wife, "Elmira" age 27y b. @ 1833 Pennsylvania are living in Ithaca, Richland, WI with their son, James Hoxey (sp) Age 0y b. @ 1860 WI.

Adopted: Frank Chatman-Hoxie Elmina's child from a previous marriage.
Three additional children resulted from this marriage, James, Lillian and Fred Hoxie.

1870 U S Census: Silas P. Hoxie b. @ 1831-1832 in Maine is living in Spring Green Town, Spring Green, Sauk, WI. with his wife Elmira b. 1832-1833 in Canada and children: Frank b. 1855-1856 in WI; James b. 1859-1860 in WI and Lillian b. 1862-1863 in WI.

Married Second Wife: Edith Cole Walker on 28 May, 1891 in Boscobel, Grant, WI.
Edith had at least two sons from a previous marriage. One died from drowning as an infant. She was divorced from that marriage. Edith was the individual that found/or observed Elmina in her house when she had a stroke, which Elmina died from shortly thereafter, October, 1889 at 56 yr of age. Edith became Sila's housekeeper after that. She and Silas married May of 1891 in Grant County, WI. They continued to live at Sila's residence in Spring Green up until his passing.

Two sons resulted from this second marriage. Allen was born in 1893 when Silas would have been about 61 y of age. The second son, Louis was b. 1898 when Silas would have been about 66y of age.

When Silas died, his will left the money and property to his second wife and their two sons. Prior to Probate settlement (per Sauk Co.Records) it was found that Edith loaned some of the estate money to her son by her first marriage, Leonard Cole Walker, which she stated was to start a sheep farm in South Dakota.

A family story is that after Sila's death on 10 Mar 1900, Edith moved with her sons to Sterling, Colorado where they started a wheat farm. However, she was living in S. Dakota in 1905......and is shown on the census card as residing there for 3 years, since about 1902.

1905 S. Dakota Census shows Edith Hoxie "homesteader' b. @1860 WI as living in Lyman, South Dakota (parents b. NY).
. She then apparently followed Leonard out to S. Dakota with Allen and Louis her sons with Silas Hoxie.
Allen Hoxie and Louis Hoxie are shown in the South Dakota School Records as enrolled in 1908 in Lyman, S. Dakota.
Later Edith removed with her two sons by Silas and her son, Leonard, by her first marriage, to Sterling, Colorado where she purchased land to farm wheat.
