John Larry Whiten
July 10, 1946 - September 27, 2023
Anderson, South Carolina
John Larry Whiten, age 77, of Anderson, SC, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at AnMed Medical Center.
John was born July 10, 1946, in Anderson, SC. He was the son of the late George E. Whiten and Ruth Allen Whiten. He was married to the late Barbara McClain Whiten and he was a member of Eureka Baptist Church.
After graduation from T.L. Hanna High School, John attended Anderson College and transferred to the University of South Carolina. John enlisted in the US Air Force in 1968 where he earned rank of Staff Sergeant. After military retirement, he traveled around the world and worked in a variety of jobs. He worked for Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust Co. as a loan collections officer, a salesman for a car dealership, and a life insurance agent. But wherever he traveled and whatever he did, he could never hide the fact of his longing for Anderson, South Carolina.
Having been born and reared in Anderson along with his brothers, William Keifer, known as George, Charles, David, and James, he enjoyed the slower pace of life. He and his brothers played in the streets, enjoyed school, and grew to appreciate the history of his southern town. His love never waned from Anderson, and he had a fierce pride in being an Andersonian.
John married the love of his life, Barbara McClain Whiten, in March of 1969. Barbara was a childhood friend who captured his heart at an early age. She traveled with him, but wanted to raise their son, Johnathan Whiten in Anderson. She too was proud to be from Anderson.
John enjoyed a quiet life in the last few years. Sometimes visiting with his sister, Margaret Whiten Therrell, and his son, Johnathan. Many strangers knew John not by name exactly, but because he could always find a topic to discuss in great detail with those he met. The Anderson community has lost a pioneer Andersonian, a defender of his country, and layman of southern history.
The funeral service with military honors will be held Monday, October 2, 2023, at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00-2:45 pm. A private burial will be at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
