Man Who Came To Wichita In Covered Wagon Dies Sunday

J. J. Branson Celebrated his Golden Wedding Anniversary Week Ago
TO COUNTY IN 1873

J. J. Branson, 77, who came to Kansas in a covered wagon in 1873, died early Sunday morning at his home, 1315 Ellis, after a lingering illness.

Coming to Kansas from his birth place in Illinois with his father, Mr. Branson settled on the Old A. C. Kinsey homestead, 12 miles southeast of Wichita. He was married to Adeila Kinsey in 1881 and only last Tuesday the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Their entire married life had been lived in Sedgwick County. Retiring in 1900, Mr. Branson moved to Wichita where he had since resided.

Having lived through the lean years of early Kansas during the time when grasshopper plagues, drought's and hard times were prevalant, Mr. Branson was of an exceptionally optimistic nature and talk of the present depression only brought a smile to his lips.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge 93, encampment 29, and of the Modern Woodmen of America.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Adelia Branson; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah Hawks, 512 South Emporia and Mrs. E. S. Miller, 3802 South Lawrence; a son, John Branson, 422 South Rooselvelt; a brother, P. K. Branson, Ames, Okla.; and a sister, Mrs. A. Lackey of Augusta, Kan.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Byrd-Snodgrass funeral home and burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery.
