Louis was born May 6, 1921 to Mary (Treacy) and James Bogan in Ardoch, ND. He was the thirteenth of fourteen children. He lived on a farm near there until 1926 when the farmhouse was destroyed by fire. The family then moved to Grand Forks, where Louis had lived ever since.

Louis was educated at St. Mary's Elementary and Junior High School and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1941. He loved all sports and was an exceptional basketball player and played on the Grand Forks Central state championship team. He also worked as a caddy at this time at the old Grand Forks Country Club.

In 1939, he joined the U.S. Army National Guard and, upon graduation from high school, he began his active military service. He served within the European Theater of Operations during World War II as a Staff Sergeant with the 957th Field Artillery Battalion. He served for four years, nine months, twenty five days and nine hours receiving an honorable discharge on September 26, 1945.

At the completion of the war, Louis returned to Grand Forks to further his education at the University of North Dakota. There he met the love of his life, Helen Marie Stephens. Their first date was eventful. He said he would drive over to pick her up. She thought by car but he came on a bike. She rode on the handlebars to the downtown Paramount Theatre to watch the latest western movie. They were married on November 24, 1948 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Louis graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1949 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a minor in History. He also received a Master's Degree from UND in 1952. He was the captain of UND's basketball team.

Upon graduating, he began his coaching career at UND in football, basketball and teaching. He became the head basketball coach at UND in 1951, the inaugural year of the Hyslop Field House. He was the head coach for eleven years and won two conference titles. He is a Sioux Award honoree as well. He was inducted into the Grand Forks Central High School, UND and North Dakota Golf Halls of Fame. He retired from UND in 1983 after thirty five years of service. Louis was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 3817, the American Legion Post 157 of East Grand Forks, MN and a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Louis is survived by his wife, Helen; their seven children, Chris (Steve) Rood and Mary (Jim) Lien of Grand Forks, ND, Dan (Joan) of Oklahoma City, OK, Jane (Alex) Cooley of Scottsdale, AZ, Kathleen (Jon) Wavra of Dallas, TX, Susan (Jeff) Kenser of Ashland, KY, and Stephanie (Todd) Johnston of Champlin, MN; brothers Ernie of San Jose, CA, Gene of Antioch, CA, and Mike (Beryl) of Austin, TX; twenty two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
