Helen M. Bogan, 89, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at Valley Transitional Care Unit in Grand Forks, surrounded by her loving family.

Helen Marie Stephens was born January 16, 1927 in Harvey, ND, the daughter of Casper and Arlene (Beiseker) Stephens. She grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Central High School in 1945. She met the love of her life, Louie at the University of North Dakota when she was a cheerleader and he was the captain of the men’s basketball team. Louie and Helen were united in marriage on a cold blustery November 24, in 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. With a growing family she tended to the home and was determined to finish her college education. Seven children later, being a coach’s wife, a daycare provider, and part time student she graduated from the UND with a degree in Physical Education and Social Studies. She taught at South Junior High School for 20 years and retired in 1985.

She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her love of God and her family. She was a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church serving as president of the Alter Society and many other duties. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Her talents were many. She loved to cook and bake, chisel wood carvings, tend to flower gardens and dance. Her greatest joy was to watch generations of her children grow in faith and fun memories.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Chris (Steve) Rood, Grand Forks ND, Mary (Jim) Lien, Fargo ND, Jane (Alex) Cooley, Scottsdale AZ, Kathleen Bogan, Dallas TX, Susan (Jeff) Kenser, Ashland KY and Stephanie (Todd) Johnston, Champlin MN and her daughter in law, Joan Bogan, Oklahoma City, OK; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis, her son, Danny, (Oklahoma City OK) and her brother Richard, (Ponte Vedra Fla.).
