He married (1) Nancy Bailey, daughter of Joshua and Jemima (Robertson) Bailey, in Lancaster County, South Carolina. Their known children were: Mary Matilda, William Edward, Susan Rebecca, Amanda Jemima and Jefferson Columbus Bowers. He and his wife divorced about 1870.
He married (2) Frances Ann Fleming on August 12, 1890 in Hart County, Georgia, her first husband. Their children were: William and Peter Albert "Lee" Fleming.
