John was the son of Henry Bailey and Elizabeth Peters. He married Mary L. "Polly" Whitten about 1823. He was commissioned in the 112th Co., Tazewell Co., VA Militia, as written by the January 1828 Court. In 1829, he was living in Tazewell County and was recommended by the court to be commissioned a Justice of the Peace; also appointed Commissioner of Revenue. John and his family moved to Missouri in the 1840s. He sold his Mercer Co., VA (WV) property in 1841. Two tracts of land John owned, located on the East River Mountain, were purchased by Charles W. Calfee and Philip P. Bailey. By 1850, he, Mary "Polly", and their seven children lived on a six-hundred-acre tract of land in Preston Twp., Grayson Co., TX, where John was a blacksmith. Children listed on 1850 Census, Grayson Co., TX: H.W. 1834, D.W.C. 1829, Elizabeth 1832, John Harley 1835, F.S. 1837, A.T. 1840, and M.J. 1844.
