Frontier character. In his early life, he was a horse thief and outlaw in Kansas, Arkansas and other states. Along with Bat Masterson and Billy Dixon, he was one of the 28 buffalo hunters who were beseiged by several hundred Comanche warriors under Quanah Parker at the Second Battle of Adobe Walls in 1874.* He later moved to Colorado and went straight.
* Disputed. Some writers have suggested that he was in
jail at Leavenworth, Kansas under the name Henry Bowen.
