George Lundy Sutherland
George Lundy Sutherland was born November 6,
1873, making his stay on earth 89 years, 11
months and 19 days.

He selected Dona Taylor, deceased for his mate
in this life and to this union were born and
reared seven children; five girls and two boys,
Mrs. Bertie Sutherland Miller Owens, Bee,
Virginia, Mrs. Bettie Rasnick, Clintwood,
Virginia, Mrs. Sallie Stiltner, Grundy,
Virginia, Mrs. Gladys Sutherland Compton,
(deceased), Mrs. Margie Dunlap, Columbus,
Ohio, Mr. Jerry Fines Sutherland, Columbus,
Ohio and Mr. Kern Sutherland, Columbus. Ohio.
He was the last surviving member of the
Newton and Betty Dyer Sutherland Family.

He professed a hope of eternal life in May,
1905 and lived a faithful member until death
called him away. Soon after he was baptized
into fellowship in the Sulphur Springs Church
of Primitive Baptists by the late William B.
Sutherland and became a member, the church
felt a need of a deacon and that God had
added to their body a soldier of the Lord.
They ordained him to the office which he
served faithfully to the end of his life.

We feel that God was very good to him and
greatly blessed him to raise all of his
children to be grown and four of the gathered
into the fold with him in the church capacity.
He suffered the heartaches of seeing his
children go out from his home in marriage and
scattered abroad in the world and even the
pangs and anxieties of one fighting in the
army, Kern for the freedom of our country
and the church, No doubt, he uttered many an
unheard prayer which will be bread cast upon
and gathered up in the days to come. In the
final moments of his passing into the
glorious Great Beyond, no one could have
gone to sleep easier than Papa Lundy passed
away. He simply stopped breathing. His heart
stop beating and all was over without a struggle.

He leaves six children, 18 grandchildren,
20 great grandchildren, his church brothers
and sisters, with a host of relatives and
friends to mourn our loss. We truly hope our
loss is heaven’s gain.

I remember Lundy and his wife Dona Sutherland.
They lived about a ¼ mile below us on Priest
Fork Road. We all called them Uncle Lun and Aunt Dona although they were no blood kin to us. Rest in peace Uncle Lun. Edgar A. Rice
